Can Omega-3 help reduce hair loss?

Omega-3 offers several health benefits such as minimizing inflammation caused due to rheumatoid arthritis, improving mood, protection against heart disease and much more. Omega-3s may help reduce hair loss along with sufficient protein intake.

At the outset, you must make sure that you are getting enough of the right nutrients in your diet, including omega-3 fatty acids, in order to avoid hair loss and retain hair health. Hair does grow faster and healthier when you add more fatty acids into your diet. The hair follicles open up to promote growth because omega-3 comes with anti-inflammatory properties thus preventing hair fall and thinning. Hair is lost on a regular basis but it can become a problem especially when the body does not receive adequate nutrients.

Types of fatty acids

Docosahexaenoic acid or DHA, eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA and alpha-linolenic acid or ALA are three of the most important types of omega-3 acids. ALA that is received by the body is converted into EPA and DHA. Intake of fish oil supplement, nuts, and other vegetable oils will ensure the absorption of these essential fatty acids into your body.

Hair and nutrition

While losing about a few dozen hair strands per day does not matter, excessive hair loss where the loss is not replaced by newer hair is a cause of concern. Because this can lead to permanent thinning and even baldness. There are a number of other reasons associated with the condition including genetics and emotional stress. But hair loss due to lack of nutrients in the body can be easily reversed by turning towards a healthy diet. Of course, poor nutrition leads to other health problems as well besides balding. Since omega-3 is an essential fatty acid that is required by the body in order to stay healthy, supplementing it into your diet helps not just the body but also the hair, to grow.

Treatment

Nutritional deficiency related hair loss is predominantly due to the lack of omega-3 fatty acids in a diet. On a daily basis, to encourage hair growth, 1 tablespoon of fish oil or 1 or 2 capsules of the same combination can diminish flaky scalp, decrease inflammation and encourage hair growth. Alternatively, incorporate omega-3 rich foods into your diet or consume 2.5 grams of omega-3 consistently.
