Can eating salty foods cause hair loss?

On an average, you should consume no more than about 2,300 mcg of salt. A high sodium diet can lead to several problems such as heart disease and blood pressure besides hair loss. Sodium is available everywhere in canned foods, soups and is present even in foods that you consume unknowingly such as breads and salads. Where iodised salts contain both sodium and iodine that are required to regulate bodily functions, too much of it can definitely be detrimental. You should speak with your doctor with regard to the amount of salt you should consume.

Iodised salt = Iodine + Salt

Iodine: Iodine is important for the appropriate functioning of your thyroid. Reduced intake can lead to hypothyroidism. You can also develop iodine deficiency. With hypothyroidism, you can experience weight gain, muscle pains, fatigue, depression, constipation and hair loss.

Salt: Sodium helps maintain a balance of body fluids and is also responsible for transmitting communication to your nerves. Blood pressure, as well as blood volume, is determined by the intake of iodine and salt. Proper body functions can lead to a good growth of hair. Table salt or sodium chloride is a common form of salt that you can intake.

If you are experiencing hair loss or balding it would be best to consult with a doctor before you directly start cutting down on your salt intake.
